Just a few days before the big day we caught up with Jay Kornegay, Vice President of the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, to discuss Superbowl 50:
SBC: Hi Jay, the biggest annual sporting event is back on Sunday; how excited are you for Carolina Panthers versus Denver Broncos in Superbowl 50?
JK: We are all very excited as this event is so popular and it’s a huge boost to our local economy. The entire city benefits from the Super Bowl. As a Bronco fan, I’m even more excited.
SBC: Can you give some details about the betting records broken in Vegas over the last two years? And are you expecting these records to be broken once more in 2016?
JK: The sports books in Nevada handled $115 million on last year’s game and the record was set two years ago when Seattle overwhelmed Denver. I think this year we’ll challenge that record. Sports betting is more popular than ever by the numbers we’re seeing this year.
SBC: This is the first Superbowl since extensive renovation at the Las Vegas Hilton; what are the key changes for new visitors to the Las Vegas SuperBook?
JK: We are now the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. The SuperBook has gone through its first major renovation since its inception back in 1986. It was long overdue but for all fans its worth the wait.
The SuperBook has installed the world’s largest indoor video LED wall. Its 240 long and 20 feet tall. The resolution and clarity is second to none. The renovation included new seating, race book, VIP sections, sports bar, betting counters and soon to be new F&B offerings.
SBC: After Superbowl XLVIII, Floyd Mayweather was forced to deny placing a $10.4 million bet on the Denver Broncos; have you seen any similarly crazy bets this year?
JK: It’s a little too early for that but we do expect some healthy six figure wagers on the game. So far, 80% of the tickets have been on the Panthers.
SBC: The Carolina Panthers are pretty big favourites to win on Sunday; as a Sportsbook who will you be supporting, and how do you see it going?
JK: As a bookmaker, you always have to support the team the books needs and that looks to be Denver. The line is currently -5.5 but it could go up even further as all the support has been on Carolina. These betting patterns makes it easier for me to root for my Broncos.
